Law & Disorder

Law & Disorder

La Casa del Tunel: Art Center in collaboration with the Studio for Southern California History. . In a 75’ X 4’ (printed mural timeline) that integrates visitor participation, this exhibit investigates moments in Southern California history that led to legislative reform, as well as episodes of vigilantism and mob behavior in the form of riots and/or rebellions. This exhibit explores both the importance of clarity in defining terms over time and why different historical agents may interpret the same event in diametrically opposed ways. This exhibit looks at the role of civil disobedience and how law enforcement reacted to such instances of protest, from the arrest of Upton Sinclair in 1923 for reading The Bill of Rights at an International Workers of the World labor protest, to the 2007 May Day march against in which officers are charged with using excessive force on journalists and participants in the protest. Law & Disorder delineates the differences between de facto and de juris forms of policy and behavior. Finally, this exhibit explores more hidden forms of crime within our society including human trafficking, gang formations, disability rights, and crimes against children
Law & Disorder 75’ X 4’ (printed mural timeline) includes history segments including: • racially restrictive covenants; • Japanese American internment; • the Zoot Suit Riots; • the use of atomic weaponry on civilians; • the Bracero Program; • the 1965 Watts Riots and the McCone Commission; • 1970 Chicano Moratorium and death of journalist Ruben Salazar; • the death of Eulia Love; • sexual harassment; • discrimination and/or prejudice; • the beating of Rodney King; • the death of LaTasha Harlins and subsequent court case; • the 1992 Riots and Christopher Commission; • the O.J. Simpson criminal trial; • the death of Victoria Arellano at an INS Detention Facility in San Pedro.

“Virgins, Warriors & Dreamers”
Combines the work of three artists---very different, yet deeply connected by the need to tell a story.

Opens Saturday April 17, 3:00 PM

Elizabeth Conroy Benati

Mirimarit Paradas, a Venezuelan art critic and resident of Margarita Island, said the following about Conroy Benati’s work: “The hubbub of the big markets and street vendors emerges in her striking shapes and the well drawn lines that delineate her silhouettes; nevertheless, the artist’s originality is present in the concept that defines her work… The effervescence of tropical colors seem to jump out of her paintings, irradiating their rhythms, transmitting the figurative energetic presence of the bodies, of a face, of gluteus [muscles], of a secret smile, of an environment where nothing is lacking, where the swelling breasts, the masculine shapes and the appearance of vegetables and fruits, even the timid presence of animals, enrich the totality of the work.”

Peggy Reavey
For me to paint something, it has to break my heart. An unbearable situation is what grabs me. By painting it –or elements of it, I can engage with and change what is unchangeable. True, a purely childish, neurotic desire is there, denial, fantasy---to make terrible endings into good ones. But for me, as these bright, cartoony paintings propose happy endings, the truth is inevitably ghosted beside them. This is not revisionist history. The absurdity of the revised assertions do not ask to be taken literally. They take a hammer to common knowledge, so we can look inside again, and feel it. Contrast (between true and false) is heightened more by distorting what happened than by futile struggling to get the facts exactly perfect--- which can never be accomplished, even by those who were there. Famous journal-keepers---Anne Frank, Meriwether Lewis, Mathew, Mark, Luke and John---painting them is how my background in writing currently manifests itself in my paintings---that and my obsession with the image of human scrawl shouldered onto a page. What else do these journalists have in common? They all have faith; they believe what happens to them is worth writing down. It means something, it matters. They want someone else to know.
